- Enrollment. Vice Chancellor Jim Sandoval reported on fall 2009 enrollment. New freshmen are down 124, while transfers are up by 91 students. This winter is projected to be the last time UCR allows mid-year transfers; we anticipate ~50 new students. The big change was in continuation rates, which are up 8.2 percent for undergraduate students and 3.0 percent for graduate students. Total enrollment by headcount for fall 2009 is 19,439, of which 4,342 are graduate students. Discussion centered around policies and practices for admitting students in fall 2010 and the need to maintain both diversity and excellence. One question is whether UCR will participate in the referral pool and, if so, to what extent. Fall ’10 applications are open until the end of the month. By the holiday break we will have an idea of the numbers, and by mid-January we will have more specific data. VC Sandoval will report back before the break and again around the third week in January.
- Media support. Associate Vice Chancellor Marcia McQuern and Director of Media Relations Kris Lovekin provided a briefing on campus services that are available for dealing with the media. They urged Cabinet members to contact one of UCR’s public information officers if they have a good story they want to publicize, an opinion piece they would like aired, a request for an interview, or a difficult situation with which they need assistance in speaking with the press. These officers can help individuals prepare for an interview, sit in on the interview itself, and do any follow-up that is necessary. Media Relations also offers a training session for faculty, UCR administrators, or anyone who is likely to deal with the media. The campus has a recording studio and a dedicated radio line for dealing with broadcast media. The Chancellor discussed the importance of telling UC’s story – as well as UCR’s – so that the public and legislature understand our many contributions to the state.
- Regents’ Update. Associate Chancellor Cindy Giorgio reported on the upcoming Regents’ meeting, to be held November 17-19 at UCLA. On Tuesday, Chancellor White and Associate Vice Chancellor Don Caskey will seek Regental approval for the UCR 10-year capital financial plan and the physical design framework. They will also seek authorization for UCR to participate in the pilot phase of a new process that UCOP is undertaking for capital improvement projects. On Wednesday, the Finance Committee will take action on student fee increases for both mid-year and fall 2010, as well as professional school degree fees. They will also vote on expansion of the Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan, including raising the maximum threshold for family income to $70,000. The Regents will vote on the University’s operating and capital budgets for 2010-11. On Wednesday afternoon, the Provost will provide the annual report to the Regents on diversity; Chancellor White has been asked to present on UCR’s achievement of excellence through diversity.
- Matters Arising. (a) Chancellor White reported that ~350 people participated in a meeting of the American Mathematical Society, which took place at UCR on Saturday. (b) He also spoke of meeting on Friday with the family of a student who was recently killed in an automobile accident, and the memorial service held Saturday at the Botanic Gardens. (c) Provost Rabenstein announced a campus forum to be held at the HUB 302 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, November 12, on strategic planning.
