Summer Campus Update

August 17, 2017

Dear Colleagues,

I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the best of what summer has to offer.

I recently attended my 45th high school reunion and appreciated spending quality time with close friends and family. I was happy to return home to Riverside, with all of the good things happening on campus and much to look forward to this fall.

In July, eight faculty members received Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) awards from the National Science Foundation. This brings our total number of active CAREER recipients to 35, which is the most of any UC campus and ranks us 20th in the nation.  These awards reflect the outstanding caliber of talent coming to UCR, as well as the deep commitment among our current staff and faculty to support their new colleagues’ success.

In terms of campus construction, updated photos have been posted for Multidisciplinary Research Building (MRB) 1, which is scheduled to open in fall 2018. The groundbreaking for the site of the California Air Resources Board has been set for October; this represents a tremendous opportunity to expand UCR’s involvement in world-class air quality research.

The campus has also received its initial set of proposals for the first phase of new student housing on the north side of campus. This fall, public charrettes will be scheduled, wherein a short list of developers will present their housing designs for campus and community input.

I have relaunched the Chancellor’s Lecture Series, beginning with Raj Chetty, Professor of Economics at Stanford, who is scheduled to speak at UCR on Dec. 1, in collaboration with the School of Public Policy and Department of Economics. Professor Chetty’s use of big data has shaped our understanding of how colleges directly contribute to upward social mobility and the American Dream—a theme we know well at UCR.  Professor Chetty’s research has been integrated into Money Magazine’s college rankings, which ranked UCR in the top 30 “Best Colleges for Your Money 2017”; and in the Brookings Report on public research universities and social mobility, where UCR ranked in the top 10.

On a different topic, I echo the sentiments of UC President Napolitano in condemning the hateful rhetoric of white supremacists marching at the University of Virginia, followed by the horrific acts of domestic terrorism in Charlottesville. Though colleges and universities have a duty to protect the freedoms of speech and assembly, these incidents remind us that we must remain vigilant in denouncing acts of hatred.

Since its origin, UCR has been committed to the creation and dissemination of knowledge, within one of the most inclusive environments in all of higher education. The list of accomplishments highlighted above reflects that tradition. Thanks to each and every one of you for your dedication to our past and to our future.

Correction: this message has been updated to correct scheduled opening of MRB1
