Campus Update

December 5, 2017

Dear Colleagues and Students,

The end of the quarter is already upon us. If you’re like me, it’s easy to forget all that has happened in the past few months as we focus upon the opportunities and challenges on the horizon, but there is indeed a lot worth remembering.

This fall, we appointed Dr. Cindy Larive as our permanent Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, we broke ground on the new Southern California headquarters of the California Air Resources Board, and we finalized nearly two years of planning by selecting American Campus Communities as our partner for development of the north side of campus.

We have also raised almost $188 million toward our $300 million Living the Promise Campaign goal. While the dollars are important, it is what we can do with those dollars that make them meaningful. For example, the campaign has allowed us to nearly double the number of endowed faculty chairs on campus from 36 to 59.  These funds allow us to recognize and support colleagues in a way that simply wasn’t possible in the past. Moreover, each of those dollars is an endorsement of our broader goals and progress.

Wherever I go, in California, across the country, or abroad, UCR alumni talk about their growing pride. They remark on how much our reputation has grown and how increasingly others are commenting on UCR to them. Being close to our progress and seeing it every day makes it easy for many of us to lose track of how impressive our accomplishments are. Professor Raj Chetty’s visit to campus last week reminds us that others, be they scholars or journalists, are noticing us as well.

We have lots yet to do, from continuing our progress on facilities; to managing the implementation of UCPath; to helping our students and colleagues deal with the uncertainties of travel bans, the DACA rescission, tax reform’s possible impact upon graduate students, and so many other unsettling events in our world; but we remain a collection of talented and hard-working people committed to each other and a better future.

I am proud of UCR and especially proud of this past quarter. I can’t wait for the next one!
