A Message from Chancellor Tim White
I am honored to have had the opportunity to participate in Undercover Boss, and hope that you enjoyed watching the show as much as I enjoyed doing it.
I agreed to participate in the show because it provided a way to get a different perspective of the day-to-day work, joy and trials of the people who make up the heartbeat of this world-class public research university. And I was not disappointed. Watching the show evoked both laughter and tears — as well as memories of the lingering pain in my legs from walking backwards across campus for several hours.
Seeing the campus from the inside out only strengthened my respect for the way the institution changes lives and creates value every day. I was moved and changed as a person and as a leader by the level of dedication shown by our students, staff and faculty.
I feel strongly that a public higher education creates a better California and a better world. It is the people on the front lines who are counseling students and doing research and creating opportunities that will impact economic health and contribute to solving some of society’s most vexing issues.
Thanks to Catharine, Christina, Nastazha and Nate for letting me into your worlds for a few hours. Each of you is an outstanding ambassador for our institution and you provided me with more insights than you will ever know.
Thanks to the gracious support of several generous donors, who provided us with the means to reward our employees. No federal, state or student funds were used in any part of the show.
And thanks to you, the reader, for taking the time to learn a little bit more about UC Riverside. Whether you are an alum, a friend of the campus, or simply a fan of Undercover Boss, I appreciate the opportunity to demonstrate my pride in UCR and its people. If you would like to further explore our institution, please feel free to look around.
Sincerely,
Tim “Pete” White
Meet our People
Nate — The Track and Field Coach
Nate Browne volunteered as a coach before landing his current job as assistant coach for UCR’s men’s track team. He helps “Pete” learn how to time runners.
Catharine — The Chemistry Professor
Catharine Larsen is an assistant professor of
chemistry at UC Riverside. She teaches a large “Introduction to Organic
Chemistry” class, using multimedia classroom technology that gives “Pete” some
trouble.
Christina — The Tour Guide
Christina Rodriguez is a UCR
student who works giving campus tours to prospective students. She makes it look
easy to walk backward as she describes the high points of the campus. It’s
harder than it looks, as Pete shows us.
Nastazha — The Library Assistant
Nastazha Sneed is a UCR student who earns money working part time in UCR’s Orbach Science Library. At one point, she trains “Pete” how to reshelve books alphabetically.
