Addressing Bias and Bigotry

UC Riverside Addressing Bias and Bigotry

A Call for Proposals and Mini-Grant Requests

Overview
The University of California Office of the President is providing one-time resources to UC campuses to address and combat antisemitism, Islamophobia, and other forms of bias, bigotry, and discrimination at the university. The one-time resource will contribute to our mutual aim of a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment at our campus.  The Chancellor’s Office is issuing a call for proposals and mini-grant requests to seek the campus community engagement and participation in addressing this critical issue by developing new or expanded initiatives and programs.

UC Riverside will receive $500,000 as a one-time resource.  UC Riverside was recently awarded $325,000 to focus on the following areas:
  • Mental Health and Trauma Support: Counseling and clinical services, workshops, Title VI Support Model, Well-Being Campaigns, student-centered activities, and holistic wellness programming.
  • Education Programming: Case Studies Library, Train the Trainer Program, Online Training Tool Kit, Enhancement of the Free Speech Website, Student Lead Workshops, and Speaker Series.
  • Training/Professional Development for Leaders, Faculty, and Staff: Coaching Resources, Professional Training by the National Conflict Resolution Center, development of workshops for student leaders, Training for Professional Staff managing freedom of expression, and campus events.

On behalf of the Chancellor’s Office, the office of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs will lead this initiative and include campus partners from students, faculty, and staff to develop and implement programs in these three areas. In addition, a small portion of the funds will be distributed to address urgent campus needs in this area.

Now, UC Riverside is accepting proposals for the remaining $175,000 in funds to students, staff, and faculty.  Funds have also been set aside from Phase 1 for mini-grants of up to $5,000. The application deadline is May 10.

With our main focus on creating and maintaining a safe, inclusive, and respectful campus environment, the framework of this call for proposals is to:

  • Engage emergency mental health and trauma support resources for students, faculty, and staff who may be struggling with recent events or with the climate on their campus. Where existing programs and services exist at a campus/location, funding can be used to continue and expand these programs.
  • Fund voluntary, extracurricular, and non-credit-bearing educational programs that will help inform and improve the public discourse on bias and bigotry, including programs focused on better understanding antisemitism and Islamophobia, how to recognize and combat extremism, and the history of the Middle East.
  • Fund professional development and training for UCR leaders, staff, and faculty to guide them in navigating their roles as educators so that they are equipped with the knowledge they need to respond when issues arise. Proposals may include programs to improve processes that improve awareness and response to incidents of bias, bigotry, and discrimination.

Proposals should comply with University and campus policies and procedures on the use of state funds, and the Policy on Relations of University Staff Members with State and Federal Officials.

The Review Committee will have representation from the below campus stakeholders and they will review proposals and make final recommendations to the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Office of the Chancellor who will decide on the funding proposals.
