Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Announcement

January 3, 2018

Dear Campus Community,

I write to announce that Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Jim Sandoval has decided to retire after 28 years of service to UC Riverside.

Jim arrived in 1989 as Director of Financial Aid and was appointed Vice Chancellor in 2001. Over the years, he has overseen Enrollment Services, Student Life, Health and Wellness, Residential Life, and Auxiliary Services. Jim was appointed to the California Student Aid Commission in 2003 and has been a tireless advocate for students over almost four decades in the University of California system.

Among Jim’s most notable contributions were fostering the growth, diversity, and well-being of our student body, nurturing opportunities for student leadership, encouraging a more vibrant campus life, and overseeing the construction of the Highlander Union Building, Glen Mor Student Housing, and the Student Recreation Center expansion.

Effective today, Graduate School of Education (GSOE) Dean Tom Smith has agreed to serve as Interim Vice Chancellor while we initiate a national search for a permanent chief student affairs officer. I’m grateful to Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students Emilio “Joe” Virata for assuming a larger leadership role through this transition.

Following consultation with campus and student leadership, I plan to announce the formation of a search advisory committee and launch the search for our next Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
