Joint Statement on UCR Principles of Community

September 29, 2017

Dear UCR Community:

The UCR Principles of Community define our commitment to a campus environment based on personal growth, equity, and mutual respect. These principles are fundamental to UCR’s education, research, and public service missions. At the beginning of this academic year, we write to reaffirm our joint commitment to these shared values.

UCR is proud of being a diverse and welcoming place for students, faculty, staff, and visitors, who represent a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. Given this, we share an obligation to ensure that all members of our community have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Particularly now—after incidents at the University of Virginia and UC Berkeley and the rescinding of DACA—it is critical that we recommit to the Principles of Community.

Coequal to our dedication to mutual respect is our commitment to free speech and the free exchange of ideas. A university requires an environment where students and scholars can freely express ideas and pursue knowledge, while also promoting respectful dialogue among individuals or groups with opposing viewpoints.

Unfortunately, we have witnessed events here at UCR and nationally, where individuals have expressed offensive and repugnant views that denigrate members of our community. In response, we affirm that our dedication to free speech need not conflict with our commitment to mutual respect. To better achieve these ambitions, we have created a Free Speech Working Group comprising of students, faculty, and staff to ensure our policies are meeting the needs of the campus community and to foster transparency in how these policies are implemented.

In closing, we invite you to reflect on the Principles of Community and consider how each of us can more fully achieve the aspirations they envision.
