UC Tuition and State Disinvestment

January 2015

During the past three decades, a pattern of State disinvestment in the UC System has resulted in the University seeking alternate revenue streams while raising tuition to make ends meet. In addition, when State fiscal reality has swung from surplus to deficit, tuition levels have been highly volatile. The 5-year budget plan approved by the UC Regents in November 2014 calls for annual tuition increases of no more than 5 percent. If the State provides sufficient additional funds to the University, no tuition increases will be implemented.
